Our stack is Ethereum-like, so familiarity with – and passion for – the Ethereum ecosystem is key.

Some of the areas we tackle include blockchain infrastructure optimized for financial use-cases, protocols for specific applications (such as smart contract-based derivatives, synthetic assets, cryptocurrency stabilization, …), scalability and privacy through cryptography (zkSNARKs, multiparty computation, private transactions/assets).

Responsibilities

• Availability in a time zone different from UK/Europe - i.e. Asia or Americas
• Blockchain Node operations (monitoring, fixing/debugging, provisioning, issue management, test & diagnosis), with progressive use of automation
• Community involvement on Node operations questions (handling questions, triaging issues)
• Non-node infra support (backups; DNS admin; websites; CI/CD pipelines / automation; advice & support to team members)
• Support the creation and maintenance of documentation (both tech doc, and process)
• Support the engineering team for testing (provide & maintain infra; run tests; scripts; automation)
• Maintain and extend shell scripts and CI jobs for building, testing, releasing artefacts
• Assist with diagnosing application, network, or system performance problems and bottlenecks

Requirements - Must have

• Good knowledge of Layer 1 blockchain protocols, particularly Ethereum
• Ability to work GMT (UTC) +8 / Asia time zones or GMT (UTC) - 8 / US time zones
• Strong written and verbal English communication skills to handle client/user facing communications
• 2+ years hands-on system administration experience with critical Linux infrastructure and networks, including monitoring, diagnosing, and troubleshooting, in an environment that makes extensive use of automation, scripting, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code methodologies
• Proficiency with shell scripting in Bash and UNIX userland tools
• Experience creating and maintaining automated CI build, test, and release pipelines
• Strong understanding of Git and its use in release engineering and automation
• Experience building and maintaining Linux distro packages
• Demonstrated ability take a proactive and flexible approach to problem-solving while maintaining high-quality documentation of processes, issues, and solutions

• Escalate new issues to the Autonity development team and follow them through to resolution
• Assist the Autonity development team with testing and reproducing issues and gathering diagnostic information
• Support the creation and maintenance of documentation (both tech doc, and process)
• Assist with diagnosing application, network, or system performance problems and bottlenecks

Requirements - Must have

• Good understanding of Layer 1 blockchain protocols and Ethereum in particular
• Experience with EVM blockchain systems (deployment of smart contracts, understanding of Ethereum gas model, understanding of PoW vs PoS, …) – not necessarily professional experience
• Ability to work GMT (UTC) +8 / Asia time zones or GMT (UTC) - 8 / US time zones
• Strong written and verbal English communication skills to handle client/user facing communications

ABOUT YOU

You have experience being responsible for the operation high stake infrastructure systems and are familiar with all that this entails, such as hardware and software infrastructure management, security, resource planning, communications with the wider team and working in a highly independent and self-directed fashion. You can thrive in a fast-paced and innovative startup environment, and you are not deterred by unknowns or unfamiliar concepts.

You are currently running validator nodes for a proof-of-stake blockchain, commercially or personally. You understand the implications of protocol changes, e.g. in the context of forks and have been immersed in the blockchain world for some time.

You communicate clearly in writing and in discussions, and you are always on the lookout for ways to improve the performance, profitability, and usefulness of the nodes you are running. You love implementing efficient and highly secure systems, and have a deep rooted appreciation for how implementation details affect the big picture, and vice versa.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Manage the company’s validator node operations across several testnets and mainnets using Autonity, a new dPoS BFT L1 protocol, and in this context be responsible for internal SLAs and committed to KPIs;
• Play a key role within the global Autonity Community: participate in a leading position, and contribute to Autonity Layer-1 design discussions within the community of node operators, developers, and other stakeholders;
• Be Clearmatics’ voice in the community of Autonity validators, coordinating client upgrades, hard forks, and emergency responses to failures;
• Specify, procure, and set up the environment and infrastructure for validator nodes, as well as associated monitoring, logging, reporting, and alerting;
• Design and implement processes around validator node operations, such as incident response, key management, change management;
• Work closely with the Clearmatics Autonity development team;
• Create and define processes to extract maximum value from validator operations (including staking/bonding of stake; reaping of validator rewards) and reduce loss risks;
• Provide training and guidance for other members of the infrastructure team, or your own direct reports, to ensure 24/7 node operation;
• Communicate technical details via open source documentation;
• Work with various teams and the wider community to engage with new trends and opportunities revealed by internal data, blockchain research and the wider blockchain industry.

REQUIREMENTS

• Experience running validator nodes for a proof-of-stake blockchain, commercially or as a tinkerer;
• Ability to demonstrate a deep understanding of the implications of protocol changes, e.g. in the context of forks;
• Experience managing and running high stake infrastructure
• Experience with cryptographic key management on production systems;
• Familiarity with deploying and testing production software in various cloud environments;
• A deep and detailed understanding of accountability, consensus algorithms, and real-world risks, with a particular focus on financial and reputational implications;
• The ability to work closely and in detail with technical and research teams for the practical exploration of scenarios; testing; and continuous improvement.
• Ability to reason about the economics and incentive structures of a blockchain system confidently

NICE TO HAVE

• Experience managing validator nodes for a delegated-proof-of-stake Byzantine Fault Tolerant blockchain mainnet;
• Familiarity with deploying and testing blockchain nodes in various cloud environments;
• An entrepreneurial inclination
• Experience with redundant systems and distributed data storage solutions (e.g. CEPH)

About you

You’re a systems programmer with good knowledge of Layer 1 protocols, and a passion for blockchain and decentralisation. You enjoy working to a high standard and writing code that is clean, performant, and maintainable. You appreciate the importance of careful design choices and can anticipate the impact of code changes on wider system behaviour. You can demonstrate a strong interest in blockchain and may even have open source contributions that you can highlight. You express yourself clearly in writing and in discussions.

Responsibilities

You will be involved at all stages of the development lifecycle for the Autonity protocol and its blockchain node client (a fork of go-ethereum). These include:

• Implementing new protocol features in Go and Solidity
• Developing new distributed systems tests and frameworks
• Contributing to protocol and design specifications
• Working with members of the community to resolve issues
• Your work will ensure that Autonity client is correct, reliable, performant, and secure. This will enable Autonity to serve as the foundational layer for a new ecosystem of decentralised markets.

Requirements

• At least a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
• Strong programming skills in a low-level language like Go, Rust, or C++ (ideally 2+ years with Go)
• Experience with network, concurrent, and distributed programming/debugging on Linux systems
• Good knowledge of Ethereum protocols, BFT and dPoS consensus, P2P messaging, and crypto primitives

Bonus points

• Experience developing on a blockchain node client (preferably Ethereum-like)
• Knowledge of distributed systems theory obtained from coursework or self-study

Requirements

• 5+ years of commercial experience in web application development
• Strong JavaScript programming skills (and ideally TypeScript)

• Experience working with SQL and GraphQL data sources
• Good understanding of modern web application architecture
• Experience with browser testing and debugging
